Patron and Ambassadors
The Samaritans Crisis Line is often looking for Ambassadors to join us in spreading our message of support.
We anticipate that our Ambassadors would provide the following roles within the Samaritans:
- Be in attendance of key Samaritans Crisis Line events such as significant fundraising events
- Promote the organisation on a day to day basis through their established networks
- Provide their name and personal profile on the Samaritans Crisis Line website.

Patron
The Honorable Justice John McKechnie
The Hon. Justice John McKechnie is currently a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. After matriculating from Scotch College in 1967 John spent a year as a Rotary Exchange student in the USA. Completing a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1972 John was admitted to practice in 1974. John was appointed Queens Counsel in 1989 and Director of Public Prosecutions 1991 - 1999 ceasing on appointment as judge.
John has been a part time university teacher for 25 years and is currently teaching at Murdoch University as well as a co author of Criminal Law in Queeensland and Western Australia. In the past John has been Chair of Telateen, Director of Samaritans, a Board member of Holyoake, Richmond Fellowship and Trinity Residential College. John is currently Chair of Council at Presbyterian Ladies College and Chair of Uniting Church First Third group.
John is married with 5 children.
John has supported Samaritans Crisis Line for many years, from his time as Director, to helping celebrate the organisation’s 40th anniversary. His ongoing support of and commitment to the cause, understanding of the main issues and high profile in the community make him an excellent representative for the Samaritans Crisis Line.
Ambassador
Ricky Burges, Chief Executive Officer, Western Australian Local Government Association.
Ricky joined WALGA in February 2000. Prior to joining WALGA, she was the Director General of the Department for Culture & the Arts, a position she held for 18 months, Chief Executive Officer of Perth Zoo for four years and a Director of Human Resources at the WA Tourism Commission for seven years.
Ricky has a Masters in Leadership and Management from the Curtin University of Technology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Development.
Ricky sits on the ROADS Foundation, The McCusker Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease Research, the Indigenous Implementation Board, the Local Government Insurance Board and various Local Government committees and Boards. Ricky is the past President of the Australian Institute of Management and the Board of the Art Gallery of Western Australia. She was the Western Australian Businesswoman of the Year in 1997 and was awarded a Public Service Medal in 2007.
Ambassador
Mark Nicoski, West Coast Eagles player.
Mark is a professional Australian rules footballer for the West Coast Eagles and has been wearing the number 6 gurnsey from the start of the 2007 AFL season, his career with the Eagles begun as a rookie in 2003. Mark is a first generation West Australian of Croation and Macedonian decent.
When not on the pitch Mark seeks to give his time back to the community that has supported him through his career. In the past Mark has been a regular visitor at Princess Margaret Hospital for children, taking fellow Eagles with him and encouraging his team mates to appreciate the reality of their fortunate lives despite the pressures of the big league. Mark has also spent time supporting young players coming up through the WAFL which he also found to be rewarding.
These experiences led Mark to the Samaritans Crisis Line after identifying a passion for being there for others who are less fortunate and in need. He has a particular interest in helping young people entering adulthood with the challenges they face. Whilst completing a Business Degree at Curtin University Mark also enjoys playing music, travelling and spending time with his family, particularly his nephew's. Mark is a level headed team player who seeks to help others succeed in their careers whilst enjoying life's discoveries.
Mark joins the Samaritans Crisis Line with a desire for the work he carries out to have an emphasis on youth. Mark's high profile AFL career, media appearances and age brings diversity to our Ambassadors.
