New friends for the Samaritans Crisis Line

The Samaritans Crisis Line gained many news friends through the launch of Friends of Samaritans on the 16th of March.

With new Patron The Honourable Justice John McKechnie and Ambassadors Ricky Burges (CEO of WALGA) and Mark Nicoski (West Coast Eagles) Friends of Samaritans has already gained support from some high profile members of the community.

Over 70 guests enjoyed welcome drinks and canapes on the jetty of Mosmans Restaurant before sitting down to a three course dinner accompanied by Willoughby Park Wines.

Justice John McKechnie's inaugural address as Patron for the Samaritans Crisis Line emphasised the need for volunteers, increased public awareness and much needed funding.  "For more than 40 years, dedicated Samaritan volunteers have worked in the darker side of our community offering unconditional support to those in crisis, the despairing and the suicidal," said Justice McKechnie.  "I am proud to be Patron of an organisation of such caring, anonymous volunteers.  In an age of selfishness and instant solutions the Samaritans Crisis Line provide a splendid example of quiet service to humanity".

A silent auction and raffle assisted in raising funds on the evening with all items being donated, many by local businesses and individuals.

"Friends of Samaritans is about community involvement, an opportunity for those who aren't able to volunteer to still connect with a charity they support," said Director of the Samaritans Crisis Line Kevin Crombie.  "This has been reflected in the strong support we have received from both individuals and businesses through Western Australia."
