Mental Health Tops Samaritans Calls

A quarter of calls to Samaritans Crisis Line are from people experiencing mental illness. Another quarter come from those who are suffering as a result of their relationships with others, mostly family members. Grief and loss makes up almost 10% of calls, with another 5% being related to sexual issues.
In about one third of the calls the caller never reveals why they are calling, they talk purely of their feelings. Samaritans encourage these types of calls and understands that no matter the reason for the call, how the caller is feeling is what is important.

Samaritans Crisis line provides support to those who are suicidal, despairing, lonely or at risk of becoming so. “We provide a safe space for people to explore their feelings”, said Samaritans Crisis Line Director, Justine Colyer.
“We believe our callers have the right to make their own decisions – we’re here to provide a free, non judgemental service that lets them do that.”
