Volunteers

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Samaritans Crisis Line

Samaritans Crisis Line volunteers are everyday people who devote some of their time to helping those in crisis. What makes a Samaritan special is their discretion, reliability, open-mindedness and willingness to really listen to others.

We welcome volunteers from all walks of life.

  • No formal qualifications or previous experience required
  • You need to be over 18 years of age.

“I became a Samaritan to help others, but I have got so much more in return”

Why become a Samaritan?

There are many benefits to volunteering at the Samaritans Crisis Line, some of these are

  • You will develop listening skills that can help improve all the relationships in your life, both personal and professional.
  • You will meet new people and make new friends.
  • The Samaritans Crisis Line hold regular volunteer social events.
  • There is opportunity to expand your skills by being involved in other areas of the organisation such as training, fundraising, events and more.
  • Studies have shown contributing to your community gives an improved sense of well being and higher self esteem.
  • Studies have also shown benefits to both mental and physical health through volunteering.

Can I become a Samaritan?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Lisa is 14 and pregnant. Should she have an abortion?
  • Eric is 26 and HIV-positive. Should he tell his family?
  • Lily is 43. Her husband has a girlfriend in China. Should she leave him?
  • Albert is 68, and in constant pain from cancer. Would it be right for him to take an overdose?

If you answered a definitive yes or no to these questions, then being a Samaritan on the phones is probably not for you, however you may consider becoming a non-telephone volunteer. But if you weren’t sure, if you can listen to people tell their stories without passing judgements, please do contact us

What about becoming a non-telephone volunteer?

We understand that the telephone volunteer work our Samaritans undertake may not be for everyone. This is why we also have a variety of non-telephone volunteer positions such as assisting with

  • Administration duties
  • Fundraising and event management
  • Raising awareness and community events
  • House and garden maintenance
  • Friends of Samaritans
  • Plus more

We need you now, so please don’t hesitate to become a volunteer.
