Is The Samaritans a religious group?

No. our name is an historical accident. We are non-judgmental, non-religious and non-discriminatory.

Is The Samaritans confidential?

The Samaritans offer absolute confidentiality. There are no exceptions. What our callers say or write to us never goes beyond The Samaritans- whatever the circumstances, the caller’s age, or state of mind. Our policy of absolute confidentiality also means that, if asked, we will neither confirm nor deny whether someone is in contact with us. The confidentiality lasts forever; even after death. The police and other agencies understand and accept our total confidentiality.

While we guarantee our confidentiality, we cannot be responsible for the security of the medium you use to reach us.

How is the Samaritans funded?

The Samaritans relies heavily on charitable donations- money from the general public, charitable trusts, companies and so on to continue to support the people of WA.  Find out more about assisting us.

How can I help?

The Samaritans always needs more volunteers so that we can answer all the calls for help from people in crisis. You can volunteer to train as a “listening” volunteer – you’ll be carefully prepared before going on to the phones and will be fully supported once you start.

You can make a donation or a bequest to help us carry out our valuable work (your donation will be tax deductible).

What sort of people volunteer as Samaritans?

Samaritan volunteers are of all ages, backgrounds and come from form a wide variety of occupations- teachers, house people, trades people, nurses, psychologists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, students, etc; that is, they are ordinary people who are willing to listen and support others. These volunteers are carefully trained to offer emotional support in a crisis.

Do many people use The Samaritans?

Perth Samaritans received more than 18, 000 contacts in 2006 and a total of over 589,480 since our formation in 1967. Many more calls could be answered given more volunteers.

How can I donate clothes and goods?

If you want to donate goods and clothing then you are probably looking for the retail division of Good Samaritan Industries (GSI/Good Sammie’s).
